Bassett Community Centers offer a safe, structured environment for individuals of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to learn, play and engage with the community around them. Programs provided at the location are as diverse as the needs and interests of the communities they serve. Center space is also available for nearby residents to reserve for community meetings, clubs, classes or even social gatherings (birthdays, weddings, etc.).
The Community Swimming Pool invites passersby to jump in and cool off. We strive to have the pool open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day (weather permitting). There is no shortage of programs as the pool offers deep and shallow water aerobics classes, youth and adult swim lessons, swim team, lap swim, open swim and rentals for pool or birthday parties. A pavilion area next to the pool contains picnic tables for those who want to relax and enjoy a snack in the shade. For our sunbathers, lounge chairs and benches surround the pool.
The Community Center boasts a full-size gymnasium with a 6-hoop basketball court, a volleyball court, and shuffleboard court. We offer year round basketball leagues that can be joined, along with tournaments at special times. The basketball courts are open year round and can be rented for private and public events.
Our adult and youth volleyball leagues are designed to help develop fundamental volleyball skills while learning teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Skills taught include serving, passing, setting, hitting, and the rules of the game. The focus of the league is to have fun, meet new friends and play volleyball in a non-competitive environment.
Bassett Community Center is proud to offer a variety of baseball and softball leagues for children and adults ages 3 and up. Registration may be completed at the Bassett Community Center at the beginning of each league start. A completed registration form and payment must be received at the time of registration.
After-School Programs at Bassett Community Center offer homework help, project-based learning, creative activities, sports, games and much more! Programs are available during the entire school year - even on days where schools may be closed (e.g. teacher work days). Our programs offer a variety of services and programs for children of all abilities and interests. Programs are offered in the areas of: Health and Wellness, Academic Enrichment, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Performing and Creative Arts, and Community Service.
We have one large meeting room to accommodate around 120 people and one smaller club room serving about 60 people. We also rent our gym and pool for special events and parties. We do overnight 'Lock In' rentals for different organizations in the local area.
1959 - Present
The Bassett Community Center was built to afford Bassett employees, their families, and their friends the recreation and enjoyment they deserved. J. Coates Carter was the architect of this 42,000 square foot building which contained a variety of facilities including an outdoor pool, a full-sized gym, eight bowling lanes, four shuffleboard courts, a dining hall, basketball court, baseball field, and a children's playground. This $386,000 center was said to be the largest and finest center of its type in the state of Virginia. The grand opening of the Bassett Community Center was held on Saturday, June 11, 1960. The drive for the Bassett Community Center was conceived and spearheaded by Mr. W.M. Bassett, one of the children of John D. Bassett, Sr. and Pocahontas Hundley Bassett. He was the husband of Leda Gladys Clark and father to Mary Elizabeth Bassett Morten and Kathryn Clark Bassett. W.M. Bassett was also the driving force behind the establishment of the Bassett Public Library, the building now occupied by the Bassett Historical Center. On August 12, 1961, a dedication ceremony was held renaming the center, The Bassett Community Center, in memory of W.M. Bassett who died July 17, 1961. In the dedicatory program August 12, 1961, it reads: "W.M. Bassett was a modest man who shied away from publicity. He would be at once surprised and pleased and humbled if he could be here today at the dedication of this Center. Probably no honor would please him more. For this Center is truly a part of him left behind. It is something he wanted for the people of this community. It was he who conceived the idea for the Center and he who spearheaded the drive in the community to raise the funds to build the Center. W.M. Bassett's record in business and community endeavor is one of hard work, of good Christian living, of great and solid accomplishment. He died last year (1960) at the height of his success, still dynamic, still planning new things for the furniture industries he headed and new things for the people of the community he loved and respected. It is hoped that the dedication of this Center today confirms the grateful appreciation of this community to a man it loved and respected and shall not forget."

MISSION: To provide affordable recreational facilities for all people... combating conditions which place children and youth at risk by providing a program of recreation, education, health and fitness designed to inspire higher moral standards of conduct wherein they may develop strong bodies, keen minds, and a spirit of appropriate social behavior.
BCC is a 501c3 non-profit organization dependent upon low service fees, fundraising, grant support, and donations to sustain its facility and programming.
